It’s a soft, summertime dream that’ll inspire your next family shoot and remind you to break the box creatively. From the vintage film tones to the perfect boho dress to the abundance of daisies, there is a loveliness and softness to the art.
Nikki obviously put so much thought and intention into every detail of this shoot. We love her use of slow shutter speeds, authentic posing, and bringing her own dress for her client. Remember that you get to create the art you desire – it’s worth the extra work to shape a session to be everything you dreamed it could be.
As we are back in busy season, let this session serve as a reminder to break some “rules” and make your own magic!
Tell me a little bit about where your inspiration for this session came from?
I think the inspiration for this session came from an alignment of three very important things… Muse, location, and the dress. I have photographed my reclamation dress at this exact location before and knew the combination was magic! Cara slipped this dress on and my inspiration ignited. I feel like this dress was made for her, and that’s all the inspiration I needed!
How did you find your location and what do you love about it?
This location was actually picked by my client, but it wasn’t the first time I photographed there. It is a local farm that is well loved within the community, they have a lovely cafe and provide amazing organic produce to our community. My client is friends with the owners and suggested we go there. I had shot another motherhood session there earlier in the year (the owners daughter was my client for that session) so I jumped at the chance to return. I love that the location has these big hills that drop down to a valley, which allows for so much variety and perspectives. Plus the epic amount of daisies didn’t hurt!
What is your favorite image from the session and why?
This is my favourite because it really shows the strength Cara possesses as a mother. She is a mama to three boys, who parents with such grace and power. She birthed her third baby in under 2 hours, at home. This image to me tells the story of her journey to this point, with how she is holding her baby with such confidence, how she is watching her other boys play (off camera), and is doing so with so much beauty.
What did you learn from shooting this session? (anything big or small….ex. how you triggered your camera for self portraits, a new pose you tried and loved, something new you noticed about light, editing tips etc)
I had a lot of fun playing with a slow shutter and getting the boys to run around their mom. I have always loved these shots but always fumbled with the settings. I rarely try again if I don’t get it right the first time. This time I nailed it on the first go and am obsessed with the results!
Did you struggle with anything during this session?
I don’t photograph a lot of families so I always feel a bit nervous when I do them (despite the fact I LOVE shooting them). I hate to admit it but I had a bit of a hard time connecting with the boys at first, since I am a girl mom! They weren’t so into the session at first and I second guessed myself a bit. Once I got them to move around more, they opened up and we were able to connect more!
